Dr. Joshua Hedman was born in Galesburg, Illinois in 1977. He grew up in Bettendorf, Iowa, where he graduated high school in 1995. Dr. Hedman attended the University of Northern Iowa and graduated in 1999 with a Biology major and Chemistry minor. He moved to Chicago, IL after completing his undergraduate studies. In Chicago, Dr. Hedman graduated from Scholl College in 2003 where he received his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine. He then completed a three-year surgical residency at the DVA-Chicago. He was fortunate to receive comprehensive training regarding all foot and ankle problems, including diabetic limb salvage. Additionally, Dr. Hedman completed a 6-week surgical fellowship in European reconstructive foot and ankle surgery. In July of 2006, he moved from Chicago to San Antonio and shortly after went into practice with two of his friends at The Foot & Ankle Treatment Center of San Antonio. After a successful career in San Antonio, Dr. Hedman, later relocated back to Chicago in 2012 to practice at the Chicago Pain and Orthopedic Institute, and has recently opened the Foot and Ankle Treatment Center of Chicago. During his second year of residency, at the age of 27, he was diagnosed with late onset Type 1 Diabetes and was placed on an insulin pump a couple months following this diagnosis. Due to his extensive training in diabetic limb salvage and his recent diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes, Dr. Hedman has reached out to the American Diabetes Association and is highly involved in their mission to finding a cure for diabetes. Additionally, Dr. Hedman has seen the high incidence of diabetes and its unfortunate complications throughout this professional career in both Chicago and San Antonio. He can attest to the need for increased awareness and education in the growing diabetic population. Dr. Hedman is an active board member in Chicago for the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and served as the community chair for the 2016 Diabetes Expo in the Chicago-area. He was the former board President for the San Antonio ADA chapter and has participated in the annual ADA Expo, Tour de Cure (as a Red Rider), and Step Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes in both San Antonio and Chicago chapters.

I've been a nurse for more than twenty years, and have cared for patients in settings from the hospital to the home. Though it certainly isn't easy to help patients manage chronic diseases, I find that the challenges of doing so endlessly interesting, and a great learning process for me. Diabetes management is a special interest of mine, as this is a disease with complications that can manifest themselves in virtually any part of the body. I believe that a holistic approach to managing diabetes is necessary to preventing complications. While there are excellent medications and skilled healthcare professionals, the patients who takes an active role in his/her own care plays an equally important part in preventing and delaying complications of the disease. Searching the internet for information about diabetes can yield thousands of links with instructions for patients, and not all of this is correct. Providing accurate knowledge about diabetes management is needed for patients to understand more about how to care for themselves. My goal as a healthcare professional is to help in disseminating evidence-based information from credible sources to the patients who need to hear, and hopefully benefit, from the knowledge. I earned a DNP from the University of Alabama in Huntsville, where I am a member of the faculty for the College of Nursing. I maintain a private practice in Decatur, Alabama, and am certified in Advanced Diabetes Management.
